6 things to consider when buying a baby changing station for a commercial building
1. Location – It's an outdated concept to only put a baby changing table in the female bathroom. All caregivers need access to nappy changing facilities considering in 2022 there was a rise of 8% from 1989 to 2.1 million ‘stay at home’ male parents in the UK. Therefore, do you need a changing station in both male and female toilets, or at least have access in a unisex room, such as a disabled toilet?
2. Space – You have 2 main choices for changing tables for public bathrooms. These are countertop or a folding changing table that can be wall mounted. Foldable changing tables allow for the unit to be nicely stored away when not in use, maximising space in the washroom. Wall mounted changing tables come in either a horizontal or vertical layout to cater for a range of bathroom types.
Counter-mounted baby changing units
As their name suggests, counter-mounted baby changing units sit atop any free surfaces in your washroom. Often, these units don't use fixings to append them to the countertop, making them a very easy-to-clean and hygienic solution - providing you with the surface space to spare.
A common alternative version of counter-mounted baby changing units is solid surface baby changing units, also known as countertop-recessed units, built into the counter itself rather than simply sitting atop the surface. 3. Accessibility – will there be enough room to use the nappy changing station so that the person doing the changing has enough space, whilst at the same time not blocking the flow of washroom traffic or any exits and other amenities? Also, is there room for pushchair access too?
4. Installation height – This is important to make sure the working height of the changing table bed is suitable for the user. The advice here is to consult the installation instructions for each changing station, which can be found in the downloads section of product pages. As a rule of thumb, looking through individual manufacturer’s recommendations, an average height from floor to the bottom of the bathroom changing table should be approx. 750mm.
5. Maximum child weight – All changing tables sold by Intelligent have passed the highest test protocols for safety associated with load weight. Depending upon where the unit is sold, the advertised weight limit can vary, even though the unit has been tested above and beyond any child weight that will be placed on it. For example, Mediclinics test in their own laboratories to withstand loads over 100 kg, however European protocol is to state "The changing unit is intended for infants age up to 12 months, with a maximum weight of 11kg". Koala Kare baby changing tables, being American manufactured can state in USA that their changing tables are "Designed for Infants Only. Age up to 3.5 years and weighing less than 50 lb (22.7 kg)", yet in Europe they have to state 12months and 11kg. Just something to bear in mind when looking for maximum loads, the same unit can withstand heavier loads than European standards, but have to stipulate the European testing standard.
