Which is a better finish for a hand dryer - Brushed Stainless Steel or Chrome?
There are 2 types of stainless-steel finish. A high polished chrome or shiny finish that you can see your reflection in or a brushed/matt finish that is slightly duller in appearance. Which finish you select is determined by the rest of the washroom design and accessories like taps and dispensers in place. Brushed stainless is considered easier to maintain as it doesn’t show fingerprints and marks so easily, however, we do apply anti-scratch and marking coatings to many of our polished chrome models to overcome this problem. As a rule of thumb high traffic locations, Industrial premises, schools, and medical and food preparation locations tend to go for brushed stainless steel, whereas lower-traffic hospitality locations like hotels, bars and restaurants tend to go for bright polished chrome.
How does stainless steel differ from normal steel?
The simple answer is that normal steel will oxidize or rust and corrosion will occur when exposed to moisture and salt. Not great for a hand dryer, I am sure you will agree! Stainless steel contains a higher content of chromium which protects the iron content within the steel from oxidization, preserving the integrity of the material for longer. The price of stainless steel is higher than regular steel.
Grades of stainless-steel hand dryer
Stainless steels are classified into different series. Most hand dryer covers use 304 stainless. This is the most common type of stainless used as it offers impressive strength and corrosion resistance. It is typically used for applications where contact with food, chemicals, or fresh water is needed. It is well suited to welding and machining applications.
A lower-cost option sometimes used in cheaper hand dryers and washroom dispensers are grade 430. It doesn’t have the same anti-corrosive longevity so not so suited to long-term use in harsh environments and is far more likely to rust if the cleaner uses something more aggressive to clean it. All our dryers use 304 or better.
Finally, 314 ss is more expensive steel, sometimes used in some hand dryers. 314 ss is known as marine grade stainless steel. It has better resistance than 304 or 430 to chemicals and salts meaning it is less likely to be damaged by the use of certain cleaning products and in seaside locations where there is a higher salt content in the air.
