Invented in the US in 1907, paper towels were introduced to reduced the spread of bacteria and viruses in commercial restrooms. However, since their introduction, the proliferation of hand dryers has accelerated on concerns over sustainability and hygiene. Where there is a cheap paper towel dispenser their is invariably a bin overflowing with paper towels. Modern towels are made from recycled paper pulp, making them more sustainable, but there will always be the disposal problem with bins needed to be emptied on a regular basis.
Paper towels come in a wide range of designs from the different folding options to a variety of paper towel rolls. We explain the differences below.
The towels are in the form of a long continuous roll which can be torn of on conveniently sized pieces. Highly absorbent the towels can be ripped of, used to dry the hands then thrown away in a conveniently located bin. Paper towel roll dispensers tend to protrude from the wall somewhat because of the thickness of the rolls which come in a variety of widths and lengths
The traditional folding method where the two edges come and meet in the middle, the C-Fold are traditionally seen in hospitals, although many are moving to the more economical and easier to use V-Fold. C-Fold towels tend to be thrown away with little of the surface area being used to dry the hands, as they are rarely opened out fully. Moving to a V-Fold will help to save money. C-Fold are pulled out one at a time and can sometimes get clogged in the opening of the paper towel dispenser.
V-Fold towels tend to be easier to use and are more cost effective. Pulling one towel out reveals the edge of the next one, so there is less wastage as each towel is pulled out individually with no clogging. They are much easier to unfold so that more of the towel is used before being disposed of. Used in high traffic locations such as public toilets, restaurants and gyms, the V-Fold towel creates less waste and therefore fewer overflowing bins, although many of these locations are moving to electric hand dyers. The V-Fold is often called the inter fold paper towel.
For those organisations where saving money is a priority, Z-Fold paper towel dispensers offer the perfect solution. The Z-Fold towel is very quickly and easily opened so that the maximum surface area can be used to dry hand. Available in 1 to 3 ply, the towels can be highly absorbent and effective is drying hands.
These typically have a side handle which is pulled down to reveal the paper towels below. The lever can be repeatedly pulled to reveal a stream of paper towels, so they can be wasteful. Suitable for low traffic washrooms, lever operated handle towel dispensers sit at the cheaper end of those available in the market,
Operated by pulling the centre of the paper towel, again these are at the more budget end of the market. Ripping towels out this way can result in tearing and towels wasted. These towel pull dispensers are more hygienic than the handle operated designs as the towel is the only thing that is touched, reducing germ transmission.
The most hygienic available automatic paper towel dispensers operate by motion sensors. These 'see' the hands in close proximity and dispense single towel at exactly the right time. Waste is reduced as towels cannot be ripped out of the machine and there is no clogging.
Highly efficient and sitting at the top end of the scale in terms of price, waste bin paper towel dispensers tend are recessed into a wall, so save space. Towels are disposed of in the convenient bin which is part of the unit. These stainless steel paper towel dispensers represent the ultimate in design and functionality.
Wall mounted paper towel dispensers are commonly found in commercial washrooms, restrooms, bathrooms and toilets. It all depends on the space available. Disabled toilets tend to have more space, but in large commercial washrooms such as in hotels and cinemas, you'll tend to see the more advanced recessed models. Not only do they look better, as most of the unit is recessed in the wall, they avoid the mess of messy paper bins.
While of course, there are flushable paper towels, the general rule is to advise against it. Many an expensive plumbing job has been the cause of paper towels being flushed down the toilet. This is why most public washrooms have signs up advising against flushing, whether the paper towels are flushable or not!
